Randal Cornish

Therapist / Counsellor

Post Graduate Diploma in Counselling with Distinction (Massey)

Post Graduate Diploma in Health Sciences endorsed in Addiction and Co-existing Disorders with Merit (Otago)

My first work in the helping field was as a support worker in the acute Mental Health ward at Masterton Hospital in the late 1990s. My initial counselling qualification from Massey (2002) was in Eclectic Counselling, which draws from a wide theory base (including Gestalt, psychodynamic, narrative and CBT) to inform person-centred therapy.

My first counselling workplace was the Sedgly Family Centre in Masterton, where I worked with individuals and couples before moving to Relationship Services. Realising that substance misuse was an ‘elephant in the room’ that often contributed to stuckness and conflict, I moved into the field of addiction counselling, while training through the University of Otago National Addiction Centre, where I won the John Dobson Memorial prize for best graduate.

After a number of years at Wairarapa Addiction Services, I wanted a new challenge and took a job with Refugees as Survivors in Wellington, working for three years with former refugee survivors of complex trauma. This deeply rewarding and challenging job involved counselling work with people from diverse cultural backgrounds using interpreters, advocacy and inter-disciplinary cooperation.

Since then, I have done a one-year locum at Te Hauora Runanga o Wairarapa and I am currently an accredited provider of AOD (alcohol and other drug) reports to the Masterton District Court and offer private AOD counselling in Masterton.

I will be available to see Wellington clients at Terrace Counselling and Therapy on Tuesdays only. My fee is $130 per hour, payable on the day.
